Why go to Fort Canning Park for an outdoor family photoshoot?
Long before it was a park, Fort Canning Hill was known as Bukit Larangan, the Forbidden Hill, once home to Malay royalty. Sir Stamford Raffles later built his home on the same hilltop and planted Singapore’s very first botanic garden here in 1822.
That mix of old and new is what makes Fort Canning such a great backdrop for a family photoshoot. A short stroll can take you from a 19th-century fort gate to a leafy tree tunnel to an open lawn, all within the same park.

Whether you’re a family of three or a full three-generation household, the park’s mix of open lawns and shaded gardens gives everyone room to spread out, or huddle in close.
Fort Canning Lush Greenery
Fort Canning Green today is one of the park’s most open, breathable spaces, a wide lawn bordered by lush trees and greenery, with the kind of soft, even light that’s hard to find anywhere else in the city centre.
A morning well spent: kids racing ahead on the path, grandparents keeping pace on the benches, and a very good dog leading the way.
This is where the kids and dogs really got to roam free, running, chasing, tumbling on the grass while the rest of the family looked on. Some of our favourite frames from the day came from here, not because anyone was posing, but because nobody was.
Cupolas at Fort Canning Green
Our first stop was the twin cupolas at Fort Canning Green, two small white domed structures designed by 19th-century architect George Coleman as quiet shelters for rest and contemplation. Their clean white curves and columns make for a striking, almost storybook backdrop.
The cupola offers a perfect blend of architecture and greenery to your family portraits.
The rounded doorway is a perfect place for kids to duck into and play.
The Malayan Banyan Tree
Tucked along the park’s trails is a majestic Malayan Banyan, one of just nine Heritage Trees found in Fort Canning Park. With its wide, spreading crown, this evergreen can grow up to 20 metres tall, and its tangle of hanging aerial roots gives it an almost otherworldly presence.
It’s a spot we always recommend, its scale and character make it a wonderful, larger-than-life backdrop for a family portrait.

A Quiet Swing on the Hill
Scattered around the park, most notably on the lawn in front of Raffles House and along the top of the hill, are sets of traditional metal frame swings. They’re a favourite quiet spot in the park, a chance to slow down, enjoy the breeze, and just relax for a moment.
The swing offers a perfect blend of nature and aesthetics that’s sure to elevate your outdoor family photos. So, swing away and let us capture unforgettable moments in this garden!
Fort Canning Centre
Once British Army barracks, the Fort Canning Centre is now one of the park’s grandest heritage buildings, its colonial-era architecture giving it a classic, timeless feel. It’s a striking change of pace from the park’s gardens and greenery.

The long stairway here gave us plenty of room to line the whole family up, with everyone laughing and gathering together for a classic group portrait.
The Red Brick Footpath
Running along the edge of the park is a stretch of red brick paving, part of the Bali-inspired Sang Nila Utama Garden, weaving past the gardens and framed by trees on either side. It’s a simple spot, but the warm brick tones and dappled shade make it an easy, natural place to capture the family just walking together.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do we need a permit to take photos at Fort Canning Park?
For casual family photoshoots with a small group and handheld gear, no permit is needed. If you’re planning a larger shoot with a bigger crew, it’s best to check with NParks beforehand.
Can we reschedule if it rains?
Yes, absolutely! if it rains, we can reschedule, and there will be no charge for the change.
Just let us know, and we’ll coordinate a new date that works for you.
Are there toilets and shelter nearby?
Yes, there are public restrooms near the Fort Canning Centre and Visitor Centre, and several covered walkways and gazebos around the park.
What's the best time of day to shoot at Fort Canning Park?
Early morning, around 9am, gives you the softest light and the fewest crowds. Late afternoon, closer to golden hour, is a good second option if mornings don’t work for your family.
How long does a family photoshoot usually take?
Our sessions typically run 1.5 hours, enough time to move between three or four spots in the park without feeling rushed.
What are your booking availabilities like?
We recommend making a booking at least 1–2 months in advance for weekend sessions. Our weekend slots get filled up really quickly, so if you have a few dates in mind, do let us know so we can look into available timings for you!
