In the heart of 219 River Valley Road, time is not simply measured by the passing of years. Within these walls, generations have gathered, milestones have been celebrated, and thousands of personal stories have been preserved through portraiture.

For more than seventeen years, this heritage Peranakan corner shophouse has been home to White Room Studio — a place where natural light, architecture, and human connection come together to create photographs that transcend the moment.

Long before it became a photography studio, the building at 219 River Valley Road had already witnessed decades of Singapore’s transformation.

Built as a Peranakan corner shophouse, the space has lived many lives. It was once a residence, later a commercial space, and in more recent decades was home to various businesses, including the Golden Maid Bar in the early 1980s.

When White Room Studio moved into the building in 2009, the shophouse was already more than eight decades old. Founders Elaine Lim and Dan Yeo were not simply searching for a location — they were looking for a space with character, history, and most importantly, light.

The building’s corner position allows natural light to enter from two directions. The tall louvred windows, balcony overlooking Fort Canning, timber details, and expansive European-style arch windows on the upper floor create a quality of light that is soft, dimensional, and impossible to replicate in a purpose-built studio.

It was this rare quality of light that first revealed the building’s potential.

Elaine Lim brought a refined understanding of space and visual storytelling from her experience in architectural photography and fine-art gallery production in Sydney. Dan Yeo specialised in portraiture, with a deep appreciation for the relationship between environment and human expression.

Together, they saw that a photograph is shaped not only by the person in front of the camera, but also by the atmosphere surrounding them.

The decision to preserve the integrity of the shophouse was intentional. The ageing wooden floorboards, heritage details, and imperfections of the building were not obstacles to overcome — they were elements that gave the studio its soul.

Rather than transforming the space into a conventional studio, they allowed the architecture to remain part of the experience.

From the beginning, White Room Studio approached portraiture differently.

Instead of creating photographs that felt staged or transactional, the studio focused on creating an environment where families could relax, connect, and be themselves.

Over the years, the shophouse has welcomed newborns in their first portraits, children discovering their personalities, graduates celebrating new chapters, couples marking anniversaries, and families gathering across multiple generations.

The most meaningful moments are often the quiet ones — a grandparent’s expression as they look at their grandchildren, parents seeing how much their children have grown, or a couple recreating a portrait decades after they first stood together.

Most studios adapt their photography around a fixed environment. At White Room Studio, the relationship works both ways — the photographers have spent seventeen years learning the building.

They know how the morning light falls through the second-floor windows, how rainy afternoons soften the interiors, which corners create the most intimate family portraits, and where graduation gowns catch the afternoon glow.

That knowledge belongs to this address alone.

Over the years, White Room Studio has photographed more than 19,000 sessions at 219 River Valley Road.

Some families return year after year. Children photographed as toddlers come back for graduation portraits. Graduates return years later with families of their own.
