“Oh no…. not again…” The sky was looming with huge grey clouds couple of hours before Yan, White Room Studio’s veteran photographer, began to get ready for a special outdoor cake smash family photo-shoot for one of our old clients, Clara. This shoot was postponed before due to heavy rain during Singapore’s monsoon season, and it didn’t look like the sky will hold back today. With a leap of faith and a mutter of a prayer, neither Clara nor the studio called for a rain check. Yan traveled towards Upper Pierce Reservoir into the ever increasing low, heavy clouds.
Such are the chances all portrait photographers have to take with the weather when photographing outdoor family photoshoots, especially in Singapore. It can be bright and sunny one moment, and you’d never know how it would suddenly turn into a torrential tropical rain shower the next!
When White Room Studio took our first baby steps back in 2009, we had a small booth at yearly Pet Expo Show. We took an instant photograph of Clara and her family and dog, and became friends since then! In 2015, we photographed her son’s first birthday family photoshoot at Botanic Gardens, and now in 2021, her daughter’s first birthday!
We are absolutely in love with this outdoor cake-smash photoshoot with Clara’s family. At the end of the day, the clouds held the rain back, and provided the most perfect sky setting for the most amazing outdoor family photoshoot! A cloudy sky meant our photographer Yan had nature’s best soft light-box to gently lit the kids’ and parents’ expressions. Although it was muggy and sweaty, the serene outdoor location of the reservoir and quietness of the space (no one was around!) gave such a fairy tale-like dreamy feel to the photoshoot. Le Fairy Meadow provided all the beautiful props that you see in this photoshoot. Doesn’t this look like a scene from a fairy tale book? How amazing that it was re-created right here in Singapore, the photos turned out beautifully magical!
Upper Peirce Reservoir Park is located along Upper Thomson Road. You can find more information and directions to the park here.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR AN OUTDOOR SHOOT
Before Your Outdoor Family Photo Shoot:
Make hair, nail, and/or makeup appointments for before your session
Small details but we want everything to be perfect.
Plan your outfits a week in advance
Seriously, don’t wait until the last day! It’s a nicer feeling to wake up feeling relaxed and prepared, so plan early. We’re happy to help! So don’t be shy to whatsapp us photos of your outfits if you’re having a hard time choosing.
Prepare your kids (and other half!)
Tell them the family is “going to the park to play!” and keep things fun, lighthearted, and casual. This will be particularly helpful for shy kids, trust us!
Have your own ideas? Don’t be shy, be bold and do things your way!
Heirloom quilts, a special stuffed animal, an embroidered keepsake, etc. Anything does! In this shoot, Clara had a truly creative vision on what she wants for the outdoor cake smash photoshoot, and prepared extensive propping with Le Fairy Meadow. They made her vision happen! Look at the fairy tale setting created, and captured by us!
Sleep well. Eat well
Have an easy day the day before, including the kids! Relax, rest well, and be well fed before leaving home for your most amazing outdoor family photoshoot 🙂
How to Dress For Your Photoshoot:
Dress for the weather!
We want you to be comfortable!
Don’t wear matching clothes!
No more jeans-and-matching-shirts these days for outdoor family photoshoots! Instead, wear colors in a complimentary color palette, such as earth tones and neutrals. Muted colours are preferable, for example, lavender with light grey, pastel blue with soft browns. Avoid dark colours like black as it traps heat, looks blocky in photos and attracts mosquitoes!
No big logos on shirts, big floral patterns
Let’s avoid checkered shirts and polo shirts as well! Many clients have asked, why not polo shirts? We really think it’s a sports attire. There are many other choices of casual tops such as a cotton shirt with sleeves rolled up, a V-necked T-shirt, linen shirts etc.
Careful the undergarments!
This is an often neglected but essential point in ladies’ wardrobe. Don’t wear undergarments that shows (etc lace, patterned, loose bra straps that keep falling off your sholders) Strapless bras that hold up well wins, anytime!
A feminine touch for mums
Drop the pants, go for medium or long dresses instead. The fabric catches movement beautifully, we like that! Short dresses can be a challenge in seated poses, you know what we mean!
Comfy shoes and clothes, and tons of anti-perspirant
Be prepared to move! Be prepared for Singapore’s climate! It will be hot, it will be humid. So breathable fabrics like cotton and linen, light colored loose dresses and skirts will do. Beware the sweaty patches which may show on certain fabrics, so prep your underarms suitably!
Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize
Ribbons, flower headbands, bow ties, suspenders, hats, a little chiffon scarf, flowing clothing — help us help you to create the dreamy and cute feel in your photos!
What to Bring to Your Photo Session:
Lipstick, hair brush, compact foundation powder, blotting facial paper
A quick makeup touch up is always helpful and makes you feel better, not just on ladies!
Favorite snacks your kids will eat. For this 1.5 hour outdoor family photoshoot, don’t worry too much about what they should eat, bring what they definitely love and want!
We may walk small distances on unpaved parts of the reservoir or park. Walkable shoes are a must! Imagine running in the field on high heels with 2 kids in tow…. it’s just not gonna be good, trust us!
Change of Clothes for the Munchkins
We love kids playing without care in the park and we love photos of them running through the grass or standing by the water. In case anyone gets dirty or muddy, you would appreciate preparing a change of clothes before packing the kiddos into your car.
