Every set of new parents who walks through our doors has questions about the newborn session ahead. Do you need to bring your own wraps? What should the baby wear? What actually goes in the bag? We love these questions, so we put together this guide to help you feel fully prepared before you arrive.
WHAT WE PROVIDE, SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO
Here’s the part that tends to surprise first-time parents: you don’t need to bring a single prop. Over the years we’ve built up a full collection of styling pieces, kept on hand for exactly this moment, so every setup comes together without any effort on your end.
We keep our styling simple and timeless on purpose. Neutral palettes, natural textures like wood, wool and cotton, nothing trend-driven or overly themed. The idea is a photograph you’ll still love in ten years, not one that feels tied to a moment in styling fashion. Nothing should compete with your baby for attention, that’s always the goal.
WRAPS & SWADDLES
We keep a range of fabric weights on hand, from soft stretch jersey to lightweight cloth, each suited to different poses. Lighter, textured wraps tend to work best for the classic curled, “in-the-womb” poses, while smoother fabrics suit simple, clean portraits.
BASKETS & SHEER TULLE WRAP
Our collection of wicker baskets are studio favourites, and for good reason. They’re what give those gently curled newborn poses their shape and warmth, and we choose the size and texture to suit your baby comfortably. We love setting the stage with sheer tulle netting draped over the baskets and comfortable cushions, finished with faux florals for a dreamy, romantic touch.
HEADWEAR & ACCESSORIES
Soft bonnets, floral headbands and simple accessories are also available if you’d like them.
ADDING YOUR OWN STORY
If you have a family heirloom you want included in the shoot, a knitted toy, a christening gown, a pair of tiny shoes passed down through the family, we’d love to include it. It’s often these personal pieces that end up being the most meaningful part of the photos.
SO WHAT SHOULD YOU ACTUALLY BRING?
We take care of the props and wraps, but there are still a few things worth packing before you head over:
- Two or three outfits
- Extra nappies
- Baby wipes
- Formula or expressed milk, if bottle feeding
- A pacifier, if your baby uses one
- Burp cloths
- An extra change of clothes for baby
- A spare top for mum or dad (newborn surprises happen, and you’ll thank us for the warning)
- Any sentimental item you’d like included, like a blanket Grandma knitted or a favourite toy
If you’re still deciding what to wear, our Newborn Session Lookbook is a good place to start for outfit ideas. And if your clothes need a quick press before the session, we keep a steam iron in the studio.
WHAT FAMILIES HAVE SAID ABOUT THEIR SESSION
We were gifted a photoshoot by dear family friends, and we couldn’t have been more blessed. Yan was a fantastic photographer, we had newborn twins and they were a handful! She did great handling them, and the moments she captured were truly special. We appreciate her expertise and time.

Booked a newborn shoot with White Room Studio and I have never been happier with how the photos turned out. Justin was my photographer and he managed to capture the most beautiful photos of my family. We have a baby, a toddler and 2 dogs as part of the shoot and Justin was patient and accommodating throughout the whole session. Big thumbs to him and the rest of the team!

A STUDIO BUILT AROUND NEW PARENTS, NOT JUST NEWBORNS
We know leaving the house with a newborn is its own small achievement. So we’ve thought through everything you might need once you arrive, so you can actually settle in rather than run through a mental checklist the whole time.

From the moment you walk in, there’s a comfortable changing area with a changing pad ready whenever your baby needs it, along with a quiet, private space set aside for breastfeeding or bottle feeding.
Our photographers are also experienced at handling newborns directly, carrying, soothing and swaddling included, so you can relax knowing your little one is in gentle, capable hands while we work.
THE PERFECT PUSH PRESENT: A NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY GIFT CERTIFICATE

Give new parents the gift of timeless newborn portraits they’ll cherish for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions
What colours should we wear for a newborn photoshoot?
We recommend simple, complementary colours for the adults, solid tones or subtle patterns work best, since busy prints can compete with your baby in the frame.
For your little one, the main thing is that the outfit fits well and isn’t oversized. Need some inspiration? Our Newborn Lookbook is a great place to start.
Browse our Newborn Photography gallery to see the kind of looks and colour palettes that photograph best.
Can we request specific colours for wraps or baskets?
Yes, absolutely! Before your shoot, our photographer will give you a call to go through the details of your session, this is the perfect time to let them know if you have any colour preferences for wraps, blankets or baskets. We’ll do our best to have your preferred tones ready for the day.
Are the wraps and blankets cleaned between sessions?
Yes, absolutely. All our wraps, blankets and props are cleaned and sanitised between every session, so you can be assured your baby is always styled with fresh, hygienic pieces.
What if my baby is unwell or we need to reschedule?
No problem at all. We understand newborns can be unpredictable, and we’re happy to reschedule your session if your baby isn’t feeling well or the timing just doesn’t work out.
Is hair and makeup styling available for mum during the session?
Yes! We offer professional hair and makeup styling for an additional $200 per pax, so you can feel your best in front of the camera.
Just let us know when you book your slot and we’ll arrange this for you ahead of time. Do arrive 1 hour before your shoot to allow enough time for styling before the session begins.
Can we bring a sentimental item, like a blanket or outfit passed down from family?
Yes! We love it when families bring along something sentimental, a blanket knitted by grandma or an heirloom passed down through generations.
Just bring it along on the day, and your photographer will help incorporate it into the shoot.
