‘The Girl and Her Piano’ chronicles the extraordinary journey of Hillary O’Sullivan, a 12-year-old Singaporean pianist and climate ambassador, who was invited to perform at Bhutan’s Royal Highland Festival in October 2023 for His Majesty the King of Bhutan. Hillary is the first foreigner to be invited to participate in the festival since its inception by the King in 2016.

This performance, originally played by Hilary in Antarctica in February 2023, was composed by Eric Bettens to reflect the dire consequences of climate change. As the youngest climate ambassador during the Antarctic Climate Expedition, Hilary’s music speaks to the fragility of the world—whether in the icy landscapes of Antarctica or the towering Himalayas, where climate change is felt even in the highest peaks.

The premiere of The Girl and Her Piano drew a large audience, eager to witness this powerful documentary. Among the highlights of the evening were heartfelt speeches from the Bhutan team, particularly by Karma, who shared a poignant childhood memory. He reminisced about how, as a child, he would make ice cream by simply leaving it out in the open, letting the natural cold do its magic. Now that world, he reflected somberly, is slipping away. highlighting the impact of our changing environment.

Q&A with Andrew Tang

Andrew Tang, Singapore’s very own motorsport prodigy, has made waves in the racing world, rising through the ranks from a humble go-kart track to global racing circuits. Recently, we sat down with Andrew during our professional photoshoot to learn more about his journey, his passion for racing, and his advice for aspiring young drivers in Singapore. Here’s a glimpse into the life of one of the most exciting talents in motorsport.

What inspired you to race?

Andrew: “My family, especially my dad, has always been a big fan of racing. I remember when we were young, we watched Formula 1 every single weekend. He was always so passionate about the sport. I started go-karting when I was 7 years old. He took me to a racing circuit in Singapore—it’s gone now, but back then it was the only one we had, just a little go-kart circuit. We went there, I did about 10 minutes, and I left with a helmet. That’s basically how I got started.”

Andrew’s journey was sparked by a deep-rooted passion passed down from his father, a true motorsport enthusiast. From those early days on the Singapore circuit, Andrew’s path to racing greatness was set.

Tell us about your journey from karting to becoming a professional race car driver.

Andrew: “Growing up in Singapore, racing culture was almost non-existent. My dad used to drive me to KL, Sepang every weekend—we’d leave at 5 a.m. and return late Sunday night. I’d sleep in the car, and he’d carry me to bed, even with school the next day. That’s how it all began for me. I did a lot of my practice in Malaysia, raced a lot there, and progressed throughout Asia—Thailand, Indonesia, and so on. Finally, I qualified for the World Final, which is a go-karting event where they choose one driver from each of the 72 countries. Seventy-two drivers race against each other at the World Final. I qualified for Singapore and placed as the top Asian that year.”

“We realized that in Asia we were very strong, but in Europe, I was in the middle of the pack. That’s when my dad and I discussed it and decided we needed to take the next step. So I moved to Europe when I was 15 to pursue a career in motorsport there. I got picked up by McLaren, and racing for McLaren changed everything. In a nutshell, that’s how I progressed from go-karting to becoming a professional race car driver.”

His performance there signalled a shift to the next phase of his career—racing in Europe and eventually being picked up by McLaren.

What was the most memorable race of your career?

Andrew: “The most memorable race of my career was in New Zealand. It was the last race of the championship, and I ended up finishing 3rd, getting on the podium. But it was enough to win me the championship, so that’s why it was so memorable. Being the first Asian to win a globally renowned event in New Zealand was amazing for me, so I’ll always remember that day.”

Andrew’s victory in New Zealand marked a turning point in his career. The triumph not only secured his place on the podium but also established him as the first Asian to win such a prestigious racing event.

What part of racing do you enjoy the most?

Andrew: “The part of racing I enjoy the most is the speed, but also the ability to control that speed. I’m a bit of a control freak, so it feels really nice. Nothing else compares to being in control of a machine going so fast—that’s definitely number one on my list.”

How do you handle the pressure and adrenaline that come with high-speed racing?

What advice would you give to young aspiring race car drivers from Singapore?

Andrew: “As a young kid, there’s a lot to learn. My advice to young aspiring drivers would be to always keep your ears and eyes open. You never know when you might learn something really valuable for your career. Always be listening and watching. And for sure, have fun with it. I think that’s the most important thing—you should always find joy in what you do.”

How do you feel about posing for professional photos? Do you have any tips on feeling comfortable in front of the camera, like at the shoot today?

Andrew: “Posing for photos has always been a bit uncomfortable for me—it doesn’t come naturally. But with practice, like anything you do, the more you do it, the more comfortable you get, and it becomes more palatable. I think it’s really important and helpful to have a good photographer who can guide you on what they want you to do and what ideas you want to achieve. From there, it makes it a lot easier to meet in the middle.”

Though initially hesitant about being in front of the camera, Andrew recently stepped into a different kind of spotlight when he chose White Room Studio for a professional photoshoot. Known for capturing personalities in a relaxed and natural setting, White Room Studio provided the perfect atmosphere for Andrew to get comfortable.

Initially, posing didn’t come naturally to Andrew, but our photographers made the experience enjoyable and seamless. Our studio’s relaxed atmosphere, combined with personalized guidance, helped him ease into the process, resulting in stunning shots that captured his authentic self.

In this feature, we have the pleasure of speaking with Ratna Juita, CEO and Founder of The Mindgem, a learning and development organisation.

With a background as a TEDx speaker, facilitator, and trainer, Ratna has overcome personal struggles and transformed them into catalysts for her own growth — from conquering her trauma to navigating imposter syndrome, she has applied principles of well-being, mindfulness, and self-compassion to surmount obstacles in her life.

Having overcome her personal struggles, Ratna also volunteers to empower young women leaders and shares her insights on pressing well-being issues and tips for improvement.

1. ​Can you introduce yourself, plus a bit about your background and what led you to become a well-being strategist, mentor, and coach?

Hello, I’m Ratna! As CEO and Founder of The Mindgem, a mission-driven learning and development organization, I aim to empower individuals and organizations to build a sustainable well-being and resilience as a strategy for personal fulfillment and organisational success. I’m also a TEDx speaker, facilitator and trainer.

My journey to becoming a well-being strategist started with my biggest personal struggle, dealing with public speaking trauma. When I was 13 years old, during my English oral test, I had to recite poetry in front of the class, I was overwhelmed with anxiety which left me unable to say a single word, I was startled, trembled, I went back to my seat and I cried. I failed my final year English oral test. That incident crashed my self-confidence.

Every time I had to present in public, I recalled that trauma and I couldn’t present well. I was looking out for ways to overcome this trauma, and I was introduced to Toastmaster, a Public Speaking club. Toastmasters helps me in overcoming my fear of public speaking. I joined several Public Speaking competitions and win some of them.

Apart from Toastmasters, the practice of Mindfulness was the catalyst for my life transformation. It helps me to heal from my public speaking trauma and at the same time learn to be more at ease with the anxiety that comes before speaking. After years of learning and practicing, and witnessing the change, one of my friends invited me to share my experience.

From one workshop to many, I discovered my calling in helping others to overcome similar challenges. That was the beginning of my journey of teaching mindfulness and well-being to the people around me and the community. I started getting speaking and training gigs from corporates while working full-time then.

During Covid, where people struggle with their mental health and well-being, I felt called to support more people, thus I decided to turn my side hustle into full-time business, empowering people and organisations to elevate their well-being and discover their full potential.

2. In your opinion, what are some of the most pressing issues facing people’s well-being today? As LinkedIn’s Top Voice last year, can you share some tips or advice for people who are looking to improve their well-being but aren’t sure where to start?

In my opinion, one of the most pressing issues facing people’s well-being today is the constant pressure to perform and succeed in a world that never stops. This can lead to burnout, anxiety, and depression, among other mental health issues.

To combat this, my advice would be to come back to our inner compass and evaluate what is truly important for us, define success on our own terms, and focus on building healthy habits that nourish our body and mind, like getting enough sleep, eating well, meditation and exercising regularly.

Surround yourself with positive and supportive people, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Start small! Tiny habits that are done consistently can have a big impact on one’s overall well-being.

These habits can be as simple as drinking more water each day, taking a short walk, practicing mindfulness for a few minutes, or even just taking a deep breath and pausing for a moment to check in with oneself. By starting with small, achievable actions, one can build momentum and increase their confidence in making positive changes.

Over time, these tiny habits can add up to significant improvements in mental and physical health, relationships, and overall quality of life. So, don’t underestimate the power of starting small and taking consistent action.

Can you talk about a time when you had to overcome a significant obstacle or challenge in your own life, and how you applied the principles of well-being to do so?

As an immigrant who barely spoke English when I first came to Singapore, I was struggling a lot with low self-esteem and imposter syndrome. I received hurtful comments from people that my English was bad, which were detrimental to my personal and professional growth.

I created my own mental prison, lived in a label created by others and trapped in that invisible glass ceiling. It created so much emotional pain!

When I learn to lean into discomfort, embrace my imperfections, recognise my inner critics, acknowledge its presence and brave enough to step into my space to chart the future on my own terms, better things are unfolding :

The practice of mindfulness and self-compassion has allowed me to feel safe with my imperfections, look into it with kindness and slowly build inner trust and resources to help me discover the infinite possibilities of my full potential and growth.

In your free time, you also volunteer to grow and build a community of young women leaders. Could you tell us more about what motivated you and how you got started?

Growing up I didn’t have a good role model, I was struggling to find my life and career direction and somewhat felt lost. I chanced upon a Facebook ad that promotes Women Mentorship and curiosity led me to apply for it as we get to be mentored by some of the most accomplished women leaders in Singapore.

Since then, I have been volunteering with Young Women Leadership’s Connection for the past 5 years, from being a mentee to participate in a Pay-It-Forward Mentorship to mentor the younger female students to help them discover their career aspirations.

I also serve in the Executive Committee as Recruitment Director, grow and build the community of Young Women Leaders who are passionate in making a positive difference in the community and helping them to navigate different phases of their life transitions.

I believe that women are natural leaders and have the power to create positive change in the world. Through my work with this community, I hope to inspire and uplift the next generation of women leaders.

How important are professional headshots to you and why?

Headshots and professional portraits are incredibly important to me because they are a representation of who I am and what I stand for. I want my professional brand to convey confidence, calm, professionalism, and authenticity. It helps present myself in the best possible light, establish a strong personal brand, and make a positive first impression on potential clients.

How was your corporate photoshoot experience like at White Room Studio – did you have a vision of what you wanted and did our team achieve it?

I chose to have my corporate photoshoot at White Room Studio, and I must say, I was blown away by the professionalism and creativity of their team.

I totally enjoyed the entire corporate photography session at White Room Studio. My photographer Yan was simply amazing, and her talent and passion for photography shone through in every shot. She was able to capture the essence of my personality and bring out my best features in a way that I never thought possible. I felt completely at ease throughout the shoot, and Yan’s direction and guidance were invaluable in creating the perfect shots.

Verona, who was assisting Yan during the shoot, made sure that everything ran smoothly and that I was comfortable throughout the entire session. Her attention to detail and willingness to go above and beyond to ensure that everything was perfect really made a difference in my experience.

Photography as a Cultural and Emotional Response

Let’s take a deeper dive into this topic by looking at what French philosopher Roland Barthes has said. He argued that photography is not simply a representation of reality, but a cultural construct shaped by various factors.

When we take a photo, we are not simply taking a picture of what is there; we are also interpreting and creating an image based on our personal experiences.

For Delun, he was heavily influenced by his passion for films. On the other hand, Elaine’s recent trip to Antarctica led her to capture some stunning images of the South Pole – motivated by a love for the ocean and scuba diving.

Photographer Jia Meng continues,

A photograph communicates something beyond the obvious and the factual, revealing something unexpected. As a photographer, I would like to engage the viewer intellectually and emotionally, challenge their assumptions and expectations, and produce something that reflects my own perspective and feelings.”

And Barthes would agree as well! His theory tells us photographers like Delun (and many others in history) have gone through this same process of merging the cultural and emotional response in a photograph, as they develop their craft over the years.

So, What is Photography?

We’ve explored the different forms of photography today; as a cultural and emotional response; as a form of creation, and a form of power.

Regardless of what you think it is, photography is a deeply meaningful pursuit because it challenges our worldview.

It raises questions about the nature of reality and how it is represented through images. Is reality objective, or is it subjective?

These are some of the fundamental questions that photography raises, and it is this aspect that makes it such a fascinating art form!
