‘The Girl and Her Piano’ chronicles the extraordinary journey of Hillary O’Sullivan, a 12-year-old Singaporean pianist and climate ambassador, who was invited to perform at Bhutan’s Royal Highland Festival in October 2023 for His Majesty the King of Bhutan. Hillary is the first foreigner to be invited to participate in the festival since its inception by the King in 2016.
This performance, originally played by Hilary in Antarctica in February 2023, was composed by Eric Bettens to reflect the dire consequences of climate change. As the youngest climate ambassador during the Antarctic Climate Expedition, Hilary’s music speaks to the fragility of the world—whether in the icy landscapes of Antarctica or the towering Himalayas, where climate change is felt even in the highest peaks.
The premiere of The Girl and Her Piano drew a large audience, eager to witness this powerful documentary. Among the highlights of the evening were heartfelt speeches from the Bhutan team, particularly by Karma, who shared a poignant childhood memory. He reminisced about how, as a child, he would make ice cream by simply leaving it out in the open, letting the natural cold do its magic. Now that world, he reflected somberly, is slipping away. highlighting the impact of our changing environment.
