This year, we are winding the clock back. Pop in the cassette, because White Room Studio has officially gone Vintage 80s with our Christmas set-up: a little nostalgic, a little glam, and completely festive.

At the centre of the set, a classic red and gold Christmas tree takes the spotlight, strung with oversized bulb lights and topped with a statement star. Around it, retro touches like vintage rugs, tin ornaments, and wrapped gifts in bold red bows bring the whole scene together. It’s the kind of set that makes you want to put on a Christmas jumper, crank up the carols, and dance around the tree.

A vintage 80s theme gives you so much room to play. Rich jewel tones, plaid and classic knits all shine against our retro set, and it’s the perfect excuse to wear something a little more festive than usual.

• Go bold with classic Christmas colours: cranberry red, forest green and gold work beautifully against the tinsel.
• Add some texture: chunky knits, corduroy and plaid nod to the era without feeling like a costume.
• Dress the kids for Christmas: a Christmas jumper, velvet dress or festive outfit adds a nice pop of colour.
• Don’t worry about matching: coordinating colours and textures look more natural than identical outfits.

Through the years, our photographers have used many simple, natural ideas to put a different twist on the usual family Christmas portrait. Here are a few easy ones your family can bring to the shoot to make it even more memorable.

The Classic Combination: White, Red and Green

Try the classic yuletide colours, which are naturally vibrant and pleasing to the eye (and to the camera lens). They don’t have to be in your clothes: the green can be a spruce in the studio, or the red a festive prop beside the Christmas tree. Done well, this classic colour combination never fails to bring festive cheer to a picture.

Presenting Gifts

The opening of gifts can be your Christmas moment during the shoot. Capture the kids as they give each other presents and open them. Their anticipation, excitement and delight (and sometimes even disappointment) are priceless, and these pictures will be a joy to look back on years later.

Playing With Christmas Props

Children playing with lights or toys make some of the most popular shots, because their excitement leads to beautiful, easy photos. The more unexpected the pose, the better: hiding behind the Christmas tree or gift boxes, throwing tinsel, or hugging a big plush toy. Sleeping babies can be tucked into a basket with a soft blanket. Safety always comes first.

Candy Cane Kisses

A favourite with our photographers, and perfect for couples: hold two candy canes together and lean in with your beloved for a sweet kiss under the mistletoe. It’s easy to set up and always festive.

Cheers for the Festivities

Raise your glasses and toast to the season, with Santa hats on for full effect. It’s an easy shot for families and friends alike.

Tangled in Christmas Lights

Want something easy and just as effective? Wrap yourself, the kids (or even the pet!) in a few fairy lights and watch them dazzle. Fairy lights always make for a great photo and need very little planning. Use battery-powered lights if you try this one: safety first!

With no lack of creative angles in our studio, our highly skilled photographers will take you through this creative journey and curate the best photos for your family. During your Christmas photoshoot, we will also capture many other precious candid moments that will always put a smile on your face.

A session runs 1.5 hours. Experience the utmost convenience and privacy in our studio, with changing rooms on each level. Before you leave, you review your favourites on a large screen with our creative consultant, so you know exactly what you are taking home. Your soft copies are ready 2 weeks after the shoot.

You can also invite your best friends along to take beautiful friendship portraits together! This is the perfect time to gather and enjoy each other’s company.

A brand-new Christmas set is designed and built in the studio every year, a tradition our returning families look forward to as much as we do. A few favourites from Christmases past:

Christmas photoshoot sessions at White Room Studio start from $390 on weekdays. That covers up to four people for an hour and a half in the studio with this year’s Christmas set, professional direction throughout, and the viewing session afterwards.

Additional people are $20 each, and pets count as one. Weekend and public holiday sessions carry a $100 surcharge, and December weekends are the first to go, so book early!

What you spend beyond the session depends on what you want to take home. Retouched digital files, fine art prints, framing and hand-stitched albums are all carefully selected together with your creative consultant during your viewing session.
