Get To Know Yan

-4 White Room Studio Singapore

What do you notice first about someone when they step into your studio?

Their energy! Are they calm, confident, nervous, excited, rushed? Then how they carry themselves, what they’re here for, and how they react to the space around them. It all tells me who I’m working with.

What’s your superpower as a photographer?

Getting people so comfortable they genuinely forget there’s a camera pointed at them. Oh, and clients seem to think I’m funny, which is good enough to keep them laughing through the shoot.

Which type of session makes you happiest?

I love sessions where you can feel the family bond come alive, when they’re at ease in the space and just being themselves. Those are the shoots that stay with me.

How do you help someone who says, “I’m awkward in front of the camera”?

I tell them it’s completely fine. Everyone feels a bit awkward at first, and we’ll ease into it together. Honestly, I’m glad they told me. There’s no grand expectation here, just be yourself and let’s go from there.

What’s a photo you’re most proud of, and why?

I can’t pick just one photo, but there are definitely shoots I hold onto as favourites, more than any one image.

Describe your shooting style in one sentence.

I shoot with intention, always keeping the client’s goal in focus so they get exactly what they came for.
