A short weekday session, an hour or so, is usually all it takes. Curious what the session itself feels like? Here’s a look at our studio experience.

Walk down River Valley Road from White Room Studio and, within a few minutes, you reach a stretch of Tank Road where several layers of Singapore’s history sit close together. There is a temple founded in 1859, a church built on the site of an old soy sauce factory, and Fort Canning rising behind them.

It is easy to miss how much history sits within this short stretch of road. For twenty-nine years, Tank Road was also the terminus of Singapore’s first railway. Trains came and went from here while the temple received devotees, the church held Mass, and Fort Canning looked down over the road.

Which temples and churches stand on Tank Road?

At 15 Tank Road stands the Sri Thendayuthapani Temple, founded in 1859. It is one of the oldest places of worship in this area and is now a gazetted national monument.

The temple is also where the Thaipusam procession ends each year. When the procession comes through, Tank Road takes on a very different character as thousands of devotees make their way towards the temple.

A short distance away, at 111 Tank Road, is the Church of the Sacred Heart. The church was built between 1906 and 1910 on the site of what had previously been a soy sauce factory.

When the Church of the Sacred Heart was built, the railway was still running from Tank Road, and the temple had already been part of the neighbourhood for several decades. Today, both places of worship remain, while the railway has disappeared from the road.

Where was Singapore’s first railway station?

Singapore’s first railway line opened in 1903, with its terminus at Tank Road.

From here, trains ran north towards Bukit Timah and beyond. For passengers travelling by rail, Tank Road was where the journey began or ended.

That changed in 1932, when the railway was extended to a new terminus at Tanjong Pagar. The Tank Road station closed, and in time the railway became little more than a memory of the road.

Today, it is easy to walk along Tank Road without realising that trains once arrived here.

How did Tank Road get its name?

Tank Road takes its name from a reservoir once built at the foot of Fort Canning Hill.

There is another connection to water on the hill itself. A spring on Fort Canning was traditionally reserved for the women of the Malay royal household. Access to the hill was restricted for much of its early history, and the spring was one of the reasons for that restriction.

By the late 1890s, the riverbank was lined with godowns, rice mills, sawmills and Chinese-owned boatyards. Goods moved between the river, the warehouses and the businesses further inland.

In 1904, Tan Kah Kee opened Kiam Aik at the junction of North Boat Quay and River Valley Road. The firm initially dealt in rice and later moved into rubber. It remained there until 1934.

What would a passenger have seen leaving Tank Road Station in 1927?

In 1927, a passenger leaving the station would have found a street already busy with several different kinds of activity. The Sri Thendayuthapani Temple had been part of the area for decades, with its gopuram standing out above the road. The Church of the Sacred Heart was much newer, having been completed only a little over a decade earlier.

Behind them was Fort Canning Hill. From the road, much of it would simply have appeared as a wooded hill with the remains of the fort. Further along River Valley Road, at the junction with Mohamed Sultan Road, a new shophouse had just been completed in 1927. Its plaster decorations would still have looked fresh.

At the time, none of these places would have been seen as heritage landmarks. They were simply part of the neighbourhood.

Why did the Tank Road terminus close?

The Tank Road terminus closed in 1932 after the railway was extended to Tanjong Pagar. The new station was closer to the port and became the railway’s main terminus. After twenty-nine years, trains stopped coming to Tank Road.

The temple and church remained, as did Fort Canning Hill. The railway became part of the road’s past.

The reservoir that gave Tank Road its name has long disappeared too. Today, there is little on the street to suggest that trains once arrived here.

Further along Tank Road, the old shophouses provide another link to the neighbourhood’s earlier years.

The Keramat Sultan Iskandar Shah on Fort Canning Hill, 2026

Fort Canning Hill was known as Bukit Larangan, or Forbidden Hill, long before it became a British fort. Malay rulers were traditionally associated with the hill, and it was later used for a residence, a fort, a reservoir and a military bunker.

Why is Fort Canning called the Forbidden Hill?

Before it was called Fort Canning, the hill was known as Bukit Larangan, the Forbidden Hill.

Malay tradition holds that kings lived and were buried on the hill in the fourteenth century. Commoners were not allowed to enter the area. One explanation for the restriction was a spring on the hill that was reserved for the women of the royal household.The name survived long after the Malay kingdom had disappeared.

Tank Road, at the foot of the hill, has a different connection with water. It takes its name from a reservoir that was later built there.

Who were the kings of Bukit Larangan?

The identity of the rulers associated with the hill is difficult to establish from surviving records.

The story of Malay kings living and being buried on the hill appears in oral tradition and early Malay chronicles, but there is no complete documented royal line that can be connected securely to the site.

The name Bukit Larangan remained in use, however, and the hill continued to be associated with royalty for centuries.

What did archaeologists find on Fort Canning Hill?

In 1984, an excavation led by archaeologist John Miksic uncovered pottery, coins, glass and evidence of gold working on the hill. The material dated to the fourteenth century.

The finds provided archaeological evidence for a settlement on the hill during the period traditionally associated with the kingdom of Singapura. They also showed that people living there were involved in activities such as gold working and trade.

Whose tomb is the keramat on Fort Canning?

On the hill is a shrine known as Keramat Iskandar Shah.

It is traditionally identified as the tomb of Iskandar Shah, who is regarded in Malay tradition as the last ruler of Singapura before the royal court moved to Melaka.

The identification is disputed. Historical accounts place Iskandar Shah’s death in Melaka rather than Singapore.

The shrine was already known to visitors in the nineteenth century. In 1822, British Resident John Crawfurd recorded it and noted that it was visited by both Muslims and Hindus.
The shrine remains one of the places on the hill associated with the earlier Malay settlement.

What is left of the fort today?

Stamford Raffles built a residence on Fort Canning Hill in the 1820s. A fort was constructed later in the 1860s. A reservoir was added in the 1920s.

The fort itself has largely disappeared. Its Gothic gates survive at the base of the hill and are among the early examples of Gothic Revival architecture in Singapore.

There was also a Christian burial ground on the hill. It was later cleared, and the remains were exhumed. Some of the tombstones were reused in the boundary walls.

Among those buried there was Esther Farquhar Bernard, the daughter of William Farquhar, Singapore’s first British Resident. She died in 1838.

Of the fort’s three sally ports, which allowed soldiers to leave and re-enter the fort without using the main gate, one survives.

What happened in the Battle Box in 1942?

A military bunker was built beneath Fort Canning Hill between 1936 and 1938.

Known as the Battle Box, it contained around thirty rooms and was used as the headquarters of the Malaya Command during the Second World War.

In February 1942, British commanders met there as Japanese forces advanced on Singapore. The decision to surrender was made in the bunker on 15 February.

The bunker is about four hundred metres from the corner shophouses on River Valley Road.

Fort Canning Hill therefore contains several different periods of Singapore’s history within a relatively small area. The Malay royal settlement came first, followed by the British residence and fort, and later the military installations beneath the hill.

The Crossroads of Light: A History Around 219 River Valley Road

The area around 219 River Valley Road has changed several times.

Fort Canning Hill was already associated with Malay kings in the fourteenth century. The land below the hill remained largely undeveloped for much longer. By the early twentieth century, roads, railway tracks, temples, churches and shophouses had appeared around it.

The corner at 219 River Valley Road is where River Valley Road meets Mohamed Sultan Road. Fort Canning Hill is directly behind it, while Tank Road and the former railway terminus are a short distance away.

This series looks at the area in three chapters, from the fourteenth century to 2009.

Fort Canning: The History of Bukit Larangan, the Forbidden Hill

It looks at Bukit Larangan, the Forbidden Hill, and the Malay traditions linking the hill to the rulers of Singapura. It also covers the archaeological excavation led by John Miksic in 1984, which found fourteenth-century pottery, coins, glass and evidence of gold working.

The hill’s Keramat Iskandar Shah is also discussed. The shrine is traditionally identified with the last king of Singapura, although the identification remains disputed.

The second chapter follows the road from White Room Studio towards Tank Road, passing some of the area’s earliest landmarks: a national monument temple founded in 1859, a church built on the ruins of an old soy sauce factory, and Fort Canning rising behind both.

For twenty-nine years, the same stretch also held the terminus of Singapore’s first railway, running north towards Bukit Timah.

This chapter looks at the earlier history of the site, the businesses and tenants that occupied it over the following decades. Its tenancy history goes back to the 1970s. By the early 1980s, the ground floor also housed a bar called Golden Maid.

The building had changed uses several times, as had the road around it. What began as a commercial street became a nightlife district and later took on a different character again.

Today, White Room Studio has been based at 219 River Valley Road since 2009.

A yacht photoshoot also gives you a good mix of photos: candid, relaxed moments on the jetty and marina before boarding, and a completely different set once you’re out on the water. On land, you get the family walking together, waiting, chatting, all the small in-between moments. Once aboard, the setting opens up into an open bow, a sheltered cabin, a wide sun deck, all within the same shoot. It also turns a photoshoot into an occasion, a small adventure the whole family remembers, not just a session they sat through.

There’s a reason every yacht shoot starts here. Seated at the very front of the boat, wind in your hair, the wake fanning out ahead and the deck curving away beneath you, it’s the shot everyone wants and no location on land can fake.

Once the boat is properly underway, the wind picks up here more than anywhere else on board. We like to shoot this early, while everyone’s still fresh and the light is soft. It’s also usually the moment everyone stops performing for the camera and starts genuinely enjoying themselves, which makes for the best frames of the whole shoot.

Below Deck & The Cabin

Not every frame needs open sky. Stepping below deck, warm wood interiors, portholes, and softer, filtered light give a completely different, more intimate mood, a nice contrast to the breezy, wide-open shots up top.

The cabin is also a good spot to slow the pace down. It’s often where the smaller celebration touches happen too, a quiet toast, tucked away from the wind and glare up top.

Why go to Fort Canning Park for an outdoor family photoshoot?

Long before it was a park, Fort Canning Hill was known as Bukit Larangan, the Forbidden Hill, once home to Malay royalty. Sir Stamford Raffles later built his home on the same hilltop and planted Singapore’s very first botanic garden here in 1822.

That mix of old and new is what makes Fort Canning such a great backdrop for a family photoshoot. A short stroll can take you from a 19th-century fort gate to a leafy tree tunnel to an open lawn, all within the same park.

Whether you’re a family of three or a full three-generation household, the park’s mix of open lawns and shaded gardens gives everyone room to spread out, or huddle in close.

Fort Canning Lush Greenery

Fort Canning Green today is one of the park’s most open, breathable spaces, a wide lawn bordered by lush trees and greenery, with the kind of soft, even light that’s hard to find anywhere else in the city centre.

A morning well spent: kids racing ahead on the path, grandparents keeping pace on the benches, and a very good dog leading the way.

This is where the kids and dogs really got to roam free, running, chasing, tumbling on the grass while the rest of the family looked on. Some of our favourite frames from the day came from here, not because anyone was posing, but because nobody was.

Our first stop was the twin cupolas at Fort Canning Green, two small white domed structures designed by 19th-century architect George Coleman as quiet shelters for rest and contemplation. Their clean white curves and columns make for a striking, almost storybook backdrop.

The cupola offers a perfect blend of architecture and greenery to your family portraits.

The rounded doorway is a perfect place for kids to duck into and play.

The Malayan Banyan Tree

Tucked along the park’s trails is a majestic Malayan Banyan, one of just nine Heritage Trees found in Fort Canning Park. With its wide, spreading crown, this evergreen can grow up to 20 metres tall, and its tangle of hanging aerial roots gives it an almost otherworldly presence.

It’s a spot we always recommend, its scale and character make it a wonderful, larger-than-life backdrop for a family portrait.

A Quiet Swing on the Hill

Scattered around the park, most notably on the lawn in front of Raffles House and along the top of the hill, are sets of traditional metal frame swings. They’re a favourite quiet spot in the park, a chance to slow down, enjoy the breeze, and just relax for a moment.

The swing offers a perfect blend of nature and aesthetics that’s sure to elevate your outdoor family photos. So, swing away and let us capture unforgettable moments in this garden!

Fort Canning Centre

Once British Army barracks, the Fort Canning Centre is now one of the park’s grandest heritage buildings, its colonial-era architecture giving it a classic, timeless feel. It’s a striking change of pace from the park’s gardens and greenery.

Gather the whole family on the Fort Canning Centre’s heritage stairway for a family shoot today! 

The long stairway here gave us plenty of room to line the whole family up, with everyone laughing and gathering together for a classic group portrait.

The Red Brick Footpath

Running along the edge of the park is a stretch of red brick paving, part of the Bali-inspired Sang Nila Utama Garden, weaving past the gardens and framed by trees on either side. It’s a simple spot, but the warm brick tones and dappled shade make it an easy, natural place to capture the family just walking together.
